Practically level 5
CMMI® Maturity Level 5 provides the most potential for return on investment from process improvement, but can seem like an overwhelming mountain to climb for many organisations. The Software Engineering Institute has labeled the Maturity Level 4 and 5 process areas “The Most Misunderstood Process Areas”, and has taken action to enhance the process and performance expectations for high maturity organisations. High maturity controversy continues to this day.
Based on experiences at Raytheon, this paper will provide practical guidance for organisations seeking to balance CMMI® Level 5 expectations with their business needs. The presentation will include lessons learned on:
• establishing quality and process performance objectives for projects by decomposing higher level business goals
• selecting subprocesses and measures to statistically manage
• creating and deploying process performance models (including example process performance models)
• using process performance models and process capability baselines to compose a project’s defined process and manage performance against project goals
• identifying triggers to perform causal analysis and resolution activities, and tips for measuring the results of those activities
• managing process and related technology improvement proposals, including prioritization, piloting and deployment.
The goal of this presentation is that attendees will leverage from the presenter’s experience, and identify methods that can help their organisations achieve the benefits of Maturity Level 5 by deploying high maturity concepts in a practical manner.
