CMMI-The DFTS Journey

The BT Defence Fixed Telecommunications Service (DFTS) Programme has been in existence for nearly 12 years with another 3 years to run. It has been a highly successful public finance initiative (PFI) project delivering core voice, IP data and specialist services to the UK Ministry of Defence. With such a successful and established programme what is the case for CMMI® in DFTS? The case for improvement is always complex but there are two key factors: economic climate and underpinning margin improvements for the long term. In establishing the case for CMMI® a number of key questions needed to be addressed:

* Could the programme recover the costs in time and provide a return on investment?

* Does CMMI® fit within the DFTS business model and the complexities of a PFI deal?

* The organisation is 100% occupied on delivering essential services to the MoD, how can the space be created for change?

* Will the benefits of CMMI® stick?

The main focuses of this presentation will be:

* How DFTS got started with CMMI®?

* The progress of the improvement journey to date.

* The key lessons learned learned.

* The characterisation of what success actually "looks like" in DFTS.
